Brief:
F W Reaveley was a respected local artist who worked in the North East of England in the early part of the last century. His family had only a few surviving paintings in their possession, and wanted to use the internet to build up a comprehensive catalogue of his life's works and then to display them to a wider audience.
Starting with just a handful of pictures, the website went 'live' in 2002. We then made contact with the local press and media, drawing their attention to the project and its local interest. The response from the resulting articles was quick and successful, with the online catalogue soon rising to about thirty paintings, and also yielding important biographical information. This was followed by a feature on a Northern television art programme, which sparked renewed interest in the website, by which time the hit rate of the site had reached 1000 hits per month. The growth of the website has increased steadily since then, so we took the decision to revamp the site in 2006, both to allow for future expansion and to better present the much larger quantity of information and paintings thus far collated. The site received some 30,000 hits last year with interest registered from the USA and Canada as well as throughout the United Kingdom.
